Become a Library Volunteer!

Volunteers are a vital part of the San Benito County Free Library. Whether you’re helping with programs, supporting literacy efforts, or assisting staff behind the scenes, your time and talents make a big difference in our community.

What Volunteers Do:

  • Assist with children’s programs and events
  • Help prepare craft or program materials
  • Support library staff with organizing materials
  • Contribute to literacy and outreach initiatives

Who Can Volunteer:

  • Adults and community members who want to give back
  • No library experience necessary—training is provided!

Requirements:

  • Complete a Library Volunteer Application (linked as PDF or online form)
  • Undergo a Live Scan fingerprint background check (at no cost to you—the Library pays the fee)
  • Attend a brief volunteer orientation and training session
  • Follow County workplace policies (harassment-free, drug-free, respectful environment)
  • Must be 18 or older.

Why Live Scan?
Because volunteers may interact with children, families, and vulnerable community members, California law requires a Live Scan fingerprint background check. This ensures a safe and welcoming library for everyone.

How to Get Started:

  1. Download and complete the Volunteer Application Packet. (Click here to download)
  2. Return your completed form to the Library.
  3. Schedule your Live Scan appointment—we’ll give you instructions and cover the cost.
  4. Once cleared, we’ll contact you to set up your orientation and volunteer schedule.
