CHECKING OUT PERIODS AND LIMITS

  1. BOOKS   Most books may be checked out for (3) weeks, except for reference books. A total of (30) items, books and media, may be checked.
  2. MEDIA (DVD/CD AUDIOBOOKS)   A combination of (10) media items may be checked out, which include movies Blue-Ray/DVD (7-day checkout) and audiobooks (3-week checkout).
  3. MAGAZINES   Most magazines may be checked out for (7) days. The limit is (5) per customer and does not include the current month. Reference magazines may also be used in the library.
  4. RENEWALS  Library materials that check out for (3) weeks may be renewed for an additional (3) weeks at the library, by phone, and by accessing the library website (please follow the prompts, using your library card barcode number and the the PIN number).

The library maintains a record of unpaid fines; borrowing privileges may be suspended if fines remain unpaid.

BOOK RETURNS

Our book returns are open during the day and evening for our patron’s convenience. They are located curbside of the entrance of the library. If you plan to check out items during your your visit to the library, it is best to return the materials at the Customer Service Desk’s book return slot.

LIBRARY CARDS

A free library card may obtained by presenting some form of identification that has your name and current address. If identification is provided but not a current address, a temporary card is issued. The patron is given a postcard to address to themselves for verification of address. After receiving the postcard in the mail, the patron must bring in the postcard to obtain a permanent library card. This is done as a courtesy for individuals that need to use the Internet (1 TIME) or check out (1 BOOK) immediately and on a one-time basis. Children 17 years and younger require either a parent or guardian to be present.

Lost or stolen library cards should be reported immediately; otherwise, you will be responsible for items checked out on your library card. The Library should also be notified of changes of address or phone number.

Older Adults patrons (65 years or older) may request Older Adult Status to be exempt from overdue fines. However, these individuals may not check out materials or use library computers until the overdue items are returned.

FINES AND FEES

21 – Day Materials .25 cents per item per day; maximum fine $6.00
14 – Day Materials .25 cents per item per day; maximum fine $6.00
7 and 14 Day Media* $1.00 per item per day; maximum fine. each $6.00

*Movies (DVD’s), Audiobooks & Music CD’s

LOST/DAMAGED ITEM FEES

Library print and non-print materials: replacement costs plus $5.00 processing fee. (Refunds on lost items within (30) days of payment with original receipt).

Audiocassette/CD holder $1.00/$5.00 (cases/bags) each
Checkpoint (security) cards $1.00 per card
Bar codes/Book pocket $5.00 per item

LIBRARY CARDS

Replacement library cards $5.00 per card (First library card is free)

HOLDS/INTER-LIBRARY LOAN (ILL)

Holds are freely placed by customers on the library website or by library staff. If materials are not picked up after (7) days, the materials will be returned to the collection.

There is a $2.00 charge per inter-library item for non-pickup of items after (1) week.

The San Benito County Free Library maintains a record of unpaid overdue fines. Please be prompt and return library materials on time.
